What?

The Pritzker Passion Prize is an award, a monetary grant really, to a member of the Junior Class of my school, La Jolla Country Day School, that has a very strong passion that they wish to pursue in the summer. It can range from a project, a summer camp, really any innovative idea that needs some extra funding. All those types of callings are worth going into the application with. The Prize was inspired by the late Mr. Pritzker who used to be a humanitarian arts teacher with the school. He was a renowned supporter of following our hearts’ desires and passions. And in his memory, this award was formed and the screening process for the selected students is run by his family. They receive essays written by students on their passions, regagrding what they wish to accomplish with the funds.

Why?

I’ve very grateful and lucky to get to say that I was selected as one of the Passion Prize winners, in order to pursue my passion of global citizenship and community service abroad this summer. I wanted this grant to aid in purchasing some supplies for community service. This summer, I wanted to really focus on acquiring items like sports equipment, art supplies, toys and games, these kinds of recreational items, for children, kids who might be running out of brand new soccer balls, fresh markers or crayons, or maybe a fun board game.

Where?

I plan to take this project with me to Korea. There are several small orphanages in the South Korean countryside that require as much funds and supplies as they can receive and I plan on reaching out to a few of these groups and seeing if I’d be welcome to visit, distribute a few things if they’d like, maybe even get to hang out with the kids, or play a game or two.
